SARAMIS™ database for microbial identification

The first and original SARAMIS™ database for microorganism identification with MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry includes more than 35.000 single FingerprintSpectra of different isolates representing more than 2.000 species and 500 genera and is the most comprehensive database for microorganism identification worldwide. The microorganism identification is done by so called SuperSpectra™. The SuperSpectra™ are generated based on measurements of well known microorganisms and contain sets of genus, species and strain biomarkers which are characteristic for the respective group of microorganisms. Since the beginning in 1999, more than 2.800 SuperSpectra for microorganism identification are available today; more than 2.600 SuperSpectra™ can be used for the automatic microorganism identification. Regular extensions and evaluations of the database are carried out in cooperation with our Network of Experts in order to ensure the highest quality in microorganism identification. Therefrom our customers benefit directly because periodic database upgrades are available within service contracts.
The SARAMIS™ database is an ideal and sophisticating tool for microorganism identification like bacteria, yeast, fungi, and spores.

Quality control of SARAMIS™ database for microbial identification

Different procedures and control mechanisms are used in order to ensure the quality of microorganism identification with SARAMIS™. For the generation of one SuperSpectra™ at least 15 to 20 different representatives (isolates) of one species from different locations (hospitals, reference centers and strain culture collections) are needed. The isolates have to be in different growth phases on various growth media. The MALDI-TOF fingerprint mass spectra of each isolate will be treated by a patented weighting procedure of specific signals.
Beside the FingerprintSpectra every isolate will be determined by different biochemical methods, e.g. biochemical methods, 16sRNA-sequencing or other accredited and published microorganism identification procedures. The result of the microorganism identification by SARAMIS™ SuperSpectra™ is then compared with the other methods. In addition the SARAMIS™ microorganism identification database is routinely evaluated during interlaboratory comparisons.

Network of Experts for microorganism identification

An international and multidisciplinary Network of Experts is continuously proving the SARAMIS™ database for microorganism identification in the laboratory daily work. The members of the network are experienced specialists located in universities, international strain culture collections, hospitals, medicals laboratories and domestic reference centers. Routinely, the microorganism identification results of the SARAMIS™ database are compared with reference methods by these leading experts. Periodic meetings and workshops are carried out for the exchange of experiences and were used to discuss recent scientific results. Another aim of the network is the enlargement of the database and the development of new applications.
This network of excellence assured the extension of the edge of knowledge in microorganism identification for our customers.
